EPPI-Reviewer

EPPI-Reviewer, developed by the EPPI-Centre at University College London, is a recommended web-based tool for Cochrane authors to support the development of your review from study screening through data collection, analysis and synthesis. Note that EPPI-Reviewer is suitable to support complex reviews including narrative and qualitative synthesis. Authors working on more straightforward reviews may prefer to try Covidence, Cochrane's main recommended screening and data collection tool.

EPPI Reviewer is free to use for Cochrane authors, and you can log in using your Cochrane Account (formerly called Archie account). Note that if you sign up with your Cochrane Account, EPPI-Reviewer is free for all your Cochrane Reviews and any private reviews you set up, but if you want to create or join shared, non-Cochrane reviews, a paid licence will be required.

EPPI-Reviewer can help your team manage all stages of the process from bibliographic management, screening, coding and right through to synthesis, including meta-analysis, narrative and qualitative synthesis, which can then be exported for use in RevMan to complete your review for publication. Recent additions to the software include text mining, data clustering, classification and term extraction. Note that EPPI-Reviwer requires the free Microsoft Silverlight browser plug-in for Windows or Mac. See the EPPI-Reviewer website for more information on features and technical requirements.

Full details on how to log into EPPI-Reviewer are provided below.

To get started with EPPI-Reviewer:

  1. Go to http://eppi.ioe.ac.uk/cms/er4, open the Account Manager tab.
  2. Click the “New Account”, follow the on-screen instructions to choose your account details (username, password, email address, etc.). These don’t need to match the ones used by your Cochrane Account. The “Create Example review” option will be selected by default.
  3. An email will be sent to your email address – click the link in the email to confirm your details (be sure to check your spam filter(s) as all automated emails may be recognised as spam).
    1. (Optional) Test your newly created EPPI-Reviewer account by logging on EPPI-Reviewer here: http://eppi.ioe.ac.uk/eppireviewer4/
  4. Navigate to the main EPPI-Reviewer application (http://eppi.ioe.ac.uk/eppireviewer4/) or reload the EPPI-Reviewer page if you are already logged on via the optional step 3.a.
  5. Follow the link for Cochrane authors to log in with your Cochrane Account (you may have to give permission to allow pop-ups).
  6. After authenticating on Cochrane Account, EPPI-Reviewer will ask to either:
    1. Link to an existing EPPI-Reviewer account
      Or
    2. Create a new EPPI-Reviewer account if you don’t.
  7. Pick the first (preferred) option. You will be asked for your EPPI-Reviewer credentials.
  8. You now have a full EPPI-Reviewer account which is natively associated with your Cochrane Account.
  9. Your Cochrane Review titles will be listed in the “Archie Reviews” tab, ready for you to start creating content in EPPI-Reviewer.
  10. You will be able to access EPPI-Reviewer via either the Archie or EPPI-Reviewer credentials.
    1. Every now and then, if you will be logging on via the EPPI-Reviewer username and password, the system will ask you to refresh your authentication. Please do so whenever asked, otherwise EPPI-Reviewer can’t confirm the validity of your Cochrane Account and the Cochrane licensing won’t apply (temporarily).
    2. If in doubt, reload the EPPI-Reviewer page and log-on using the Cochrane Authors route, this will naturally refresh your authentication and restore your Cochrane license at any time.
